On the turn-based strategic campaign map, naval units at sea can bombard coastal installments in adjacent territories. In some battlefield situations, land units can call for offshore artillery support. The expansion also introduces port siege battles, in which attackers must overcome coastal cannon assaults from multiple directions, as defenders scramble to protect the harbor. Nearly 40 modernized land unit types include gunners that can be controlled from a new, third-person perspective. Americans, British, and French forces bring Gatling guns and naval firepower to traditional Samurai warfare. The main campaign takes place in the 19th century, 400 years after the battles of the original game, as advanced weaponry and foreign interests influence internal conflicts in feudal Japan. Fall of the Samurai is a stand-alone expansion of Total War: Shogun 2, in which gamers fight through the battles and politics of the Boshin War.
